Which vehicle should you actually buy?
The one the route needs. That is a duller answer than the one most operators give themselves, and it is usually cheaper.

Lower purchase price, better fuel economy on a vehicle that is in motion for most of its operating hours, and a presence that reads as professional rather than paramilitary in residential and commercial settings. SUVs and crossovers buy you height, cargo room for equipment, and the ability to reach a site down an unpaved road in February. They cost more to buy, fuel and repair. For a rural route, a property with gravel access, or a market with real winter, that trade is worth making. For downtown commercial patrol, it usually is not.
Once the body style is settled, five criteria decide between models.

Do the fuel arithmetic explicitly. A vehicle covering 50,000 patrol miles a year burns 3,333 gallons at 15 MPG and 2,500 at 20 MPG. Run the mileage cap against your real route before signing. A lease written for 12,000 miles a year against a vehicle that will do 45,000 is not a lease, it is a per-mile invoice with a delay built in.
Marked or unmarked?
Marked, unless the contract says otherwise. Deterrence is what most patrol clients are buying, and deterrence requires being seen. What does a patrol vehicle actually cost you?

Before it strands somebody, which is earlier than the point where it stops running. The trigger is not an odometer reading, it is the shape of the maintenance curve. When repair frequency and cost start climbing on one vehicle, that vehicle is at the end of its useful life whether or not it still starts.
